Prepare for Bigger Challenges
Watching your hat idea come to life in just five days is truly empowering! With this newfound knowledge, you'll be prepared to take on more ambitious design projects.
Here's What You'll Learn in 5 Days...
Day One: Monday 15th May
Planning Your Sizing
Before you jump into calculating the numbers and shaping in your hat pattern, you first have to decide what sizes you are designing it for! That’s why, on day one, we will be talking about sizing, whether you’re designing a pattern in a range of sizes or something to fit yourself.

Day Two: Tuesday 16th May
Determining the Ease
Negative ease is essential to a well-fitting, comfortable hat, but how much should you use? On day two, I’ll teach you how much negative ease to use in your hat design, whatever size you are designing it for.
Day Three: Wednesday 17th May
Calculating Your Desired Finished Measurements
In order to generate accurate stitch and round counts in your pattern, you need to have a firm idea of what size the hat should end up. On day 3, I will teach you the three measurements you need to calculate when deciding on the final dimensions of your hat.

Day Four: Thursday 18th May
Creating Your Pattern Spreadsheet
Now that you have finalised your desired finished measurements, you are ready to start calculating the numbers and shaping in your hat pattern. By the end of the day, you’ll be ready to write the first draft of your knitting pattern!
Day Five: Friday 19th May
Writing Your First Draft
On the final day of this challenge, all of your hard work will come together into the first draft of your hat pattern. I share tips on how to write and structure your knitting pattern so that it’s ready for tech editing and test knitting!

Designing a Hat Changed My Life
Back when I was just starting out as a knitting pattern designer in 2016, I remember how confusing it all felt. Where do I even start?
Thankfully, I chose a hat as my very first knitting pattern design, and it was a great way to build my confidence and dip my toe into pattern design.
I ended up offering the pattern as a free download to people who signed up to receive my weekly newsletter, and by the end of launch day, I had 500 people signed up!
Not only was the hat a great way to practice the design process, but it helped me to build a community of knitters who were interested in buying my future pattern releases.
Since then, I’ve gone on to self-publish many further designs, as well as had my patterns published by companies such as Woolfolk, Laine Magazine, Making Stories and The Fibre Co.
Designing that first hat pattern was the catalyst that helped me to build the business I have today, and in this 5-day challenge, I will show you how to design one too.
